Information to Authors

The African Journal of Health Sciences provide a forum for communication of research results and policy issues in the health sciences and related disciplines. The Journal is dedicated to serving primarily scientists in Africa who desire to publish their research findings, and those outside the continent wishing to contribute to global health. The Editorial Board will therefore give priority to articles that make significant contribution to the development and promotion of health in Africa.

Frequency of publication:Quarterly.

Content format:Each issue will contain essentially the following sections, with variants where necessary:

  • A short editorial statement on policy issues-not more than two thousand words, placed not necessarily on the first page.
  • A short review(not more than five thousand words) titled ‘Perspective’ on the current topical in the health sciences.
  • One or two review articles by invitation or on application.
  • Peer reviewed articles by invitation or on application
  • Letters to the editor.
  • News-about, and on, African health and related matters.

Research papers should be composed of the following in that order, clearly typed in double space:

  1. Title, which should be short and specific.
  2. Full names of all the authors, qualifications and affiliations of each, and full address of each author.(Qualifications of authors are only required for purposes of Editor’s use and for publication).
  3. Name and address of the corresponding author and his/her phone/fax numbers(home and office).
  4. Sources of financial support, if any.
  5. Summary of not more than 200 words.
  6. Introduction.
  7. Materials and Methods.
  8. Results.
  9. Discussion.
  10. Conclusion.
  11. Acknowledgements-placed immediately after the text, and before the references.
  12. Citations and references will be arranged according to the Vancouver Style:

    • References in the body of text should be in chronological order and identified by romans numerals in square brackets: e.g. Specific point mutation……naturally resistant laboratory isolates of P.falciparum[4,5].
    • Figures,figure legends and tables should be professionally done, and glossy print photographs in black and white prepared from them(the original art work is not required).The prints should be 75*100mm(minimum) and 125*175mm(maximum).
    • Short CommunicationsThis should posses all the elements of scientific communication as research papers, but without abstracts and subheadins and with not more than 500 words and 5 references.
    • Submission of paper to the Journal

Anyone who submits a paper for publication must provide the following:

      1. A soft copy of the manuscript in Microsoft Word format.
      2. A letter of submission.
      3. Written permission from authors whose copyright material has been used in the manuscript in PDF.
      4. Informed consent from patients whose photographs have been used in PDF.
      5. Copyright statement in PDF as follows:

I/we………………The undersigned, who is/are the author(s) of the manuscript to the African Journal of Health Sciences, in the event that the manuscript is published in the journal.I/we give guarantee that the content of the manuscript is original, and is not currently being considered for publication by another Journal.

    • Submission fee

The author will be required to pay a submission fee of $100 for international authors and Ksh.10,000 for Kenyan nationals. Submission fee for ITROMID students is Ksh.5,000.
